چکیده

This paper introduces a simple Markov process inspired by the problem of quasicrystal growth. It acts over two-letter words by randomly performing flips, a local transformation which exchanges two consecutive different letters. More precisely, only the flips which do not increase the number of pairs of consecutive identical letters are allowed. Fixed-points of such a process thus perfectly alternate different letters. We show that the expected number of flips to converge towards a fixedpoint is bounded by O(n) in the worst-case and by O(n lnn) in the average-case, where n denotes the length of the initial word.

Lost in Self-Stabilization

One of the questions addressed here is ”How can a twisted thread correct itself?”. We consider a theoretical model where the studied mathematical object represents a 2D twisted discrete thread linking two points. This thread is made of a chain of agents which are “lost”, i.e. they have no knowledge of the global setting and no sense of direction. Thus, the modifications made by the agents are l...

Two-faced processes and random number generators

Random and pseudorandom number generators (RNG and PRNG) are used for many purposes including cryptographic, modeling and simulation applications. For such applications a generated bit sequence should mimic true random, i.e., by definition, such a sequence could be interpreted as the result of the flips of a fair coin with sides that are labeled 0 and 1. It is known that the Shannon entropy of ...

Self-similarity in complete genomes

Recently it was reported that in terms of the global feature of frequency distributions of short words, whole genomes are equivalent to random sequences of a much shorter length which, for given word length, is genome independent, or universal. For two-letter words the universal equivalent random-sequence length was found to be about 300 bases. Here we show that as a rule whole genomes are high...

Quenched large deviation principle for words in a letter sequence

When we cut an i.i.d. sequence of letters into words according to an independent renewal process, we obtain an i.i.d. sequence of words. In the annealed large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical process of words, the rate function is the specific relative entropy of the observed law of words w.r.t. the reference law of words. In the present paper we consider the quenched LDP, i.e., we c...
